Now I See

Canada is only 1 of 4 countries worldwide without an abortion law whatsoever. As a result, abortion is legal throughout all nine of pregnancy for any or no reason at all. Visit "Now I See" for updates and discussions on the issue of legalized abortion in Canada and abroad.

Aborting Roe

The U.S. Supreme Court decision to uphold the Partial Birth Abortion Act of 2003 is being hailed as a major pro-life victory across America, and even celebrated by those in the pro-life movement here in Canada.

In reality, however, all the decision really does is prohibit one particular method of killing 2nd and 3rd trimester foetuses. That is, it is now illegal to pull an unborn infant from her mother feet first until all except her head is delivered, puncture the base of her skull with a pair of sharpened scissors, insert a powerful suction device, remove the contents of her skull, and finally, fully deliver and discard the dead baby.

Opponents of the ban will try and say that the procedure is extremely rare and done only when the life or health of the mother is in severe danger. These are both questionable claims. A single New Jersey "clinic" confessed to performing the procedure over 1500 times in one year, the vast majority on perfectly healthy mothers carrying perfectly healthy babies. In America, about 130,000 abortions are performed after the 12th week annually, and about 10% of those after the 20th week.

Radical, pro-abortion feminists can take comfort, however, in knowing that there are still other ways kill an unborn baby, such as in-utero dismemberment and injection of a scathing saline solution, that remain perfectly legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

Ultimately, the value of this decision lies not in the number of lives it will save, if any, but in the bringing to the surface of the social conscious the brutality of all forms of abortion. The hope is that the pro life movement will become emboldened to erect more and more bans on the barbaric practice of unborn child-killing until eventually, the killing is no more. Canada has a long way to go, but in the U.S. this decision represents an important step toward overturning Roe v Wade and achieving a culture that respects human life at all its stages.
